UNIC at Giornate Professionali di Cinema


From 29 November to 1 December UNIC attended the 46th edition of Giornate Professionali di Cinema in Sorrento, the annual Italian cinema convention which gathers each year more than 1,500 participants.

Organised by the UNIC member ANEC - the Italian Association of Cinema Exhibitors - in collaboration with ANICA -  the Italian trade association representing the Italian film and audiovisual industry - Giornate Professionali di Cinema span over 4 days and gather professionals from production, distribution, exhibition, press, technical industries, advertising and marketing, film academy and institutions.


Sonia Ragone, UNIC Industry Relations & Research Manager, was invited to take part in a panel on "Cinema value chain and challenges of exhibitors" moderated by ANEC CEO Simone Gialdini. The panel was intended as a general update on the key priorities of cinema exhibitors: new media, green cinemas, gender equality and film education. Giuseppe Suma, Head of Media Entertainment of Tik Tok Italy, presented the findings of a research on cinemas’ social media activities, Tik Tok’s growing users base, new social media trends bringing audiences to the cinemas and the strong impact of Tik Tok content (interviews, memes, reviews) on audience behaviour. On green cinemas, Marco Gisotti, journalist and sustainability expert, talked about the impact of carbon emissions not only on the environment but also on energy bills and showcased the most common measures that can make a difference, also in terms of communication to the public: the certificates, the opportunities (tax deductions, thermal account contributions, heat pumps) which are available for businesses and citizens. Sonia Ragone provided an European overview on the topic of green certificates for cinemas and related initiatives in Austria, Spain, Germany, France. Then she described the UNIC Women's Cinema Leadership Programme, the European mentoring programme now in its seventh edition aimed at female cinema professionals. The programme has inspired the new Italian initiative LED Leader Esercenti Donne, launched in July 2023 by ANEC and illustrated by Anita Di Marcoberardino. Within the Italian mentoring programme a new survey among 166 exhibitors of 412 cinemas has been conducted by Ergo Research, analysing staff structure and gender representation in cinemas. Finally on film education, Giulia Serinelli and Bruno Zambardino from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Culture presented the current calls for proposals and nationwide activities addressed to students and teachers. 


On Thursday evening, UNIC was invited to the Award Ceremony “Golden Tickets” where the Italian film industry and the city of Sorrento gathered to honour the best Italian films and most successful cinemas of the year. UNIC was proud to deliver three awards to the highest-grossing Italian films of the Cinema Revolution summer campaign: Rapito by Marco Bellocchio (to be screened by UNIC in Brussels in December), I Peggiori Giorni by Edoardo Leo and Massimiliano Bruno and Io, Capitano by Matteo Garrone.


The convention also included other industry and policy panels, as well as studios and distributors’ slate presentations. Italian cinema professionals shared optimism on the state of their national industry and were positive on the bright future of the Big Screen.
