Council conclusions on ʻEurope’s Media in the Digital Decade: An Action Plan to Support Recovery and Transformation’ & Creative Europe

The Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council took place on 17-18 May 2021 and adopted its conclusions on ʻEurope’s Media in the Digital Decade: An Action Plan to Support Recovery and Transformation’.

UNIC is welcoming the conclusions as it recognises the importance of territorial exclusivity for the European film and audiovisual sector and also acknowledges the role of cinemas as follows:  “All segments of the value chain should benefit from the transformation of the media sector, which is the objective of the Action Plan, including cinemas and festivals, which are cultural and innovation hubs offering enhanced opportunities for social interaction and for the promotion of new audiovisual content.”

The full conclusions can be found here.

UNIC also welcomes the adoption of the legal basis of Creative Europe, the EU’s programme for culture and the audiovisual sector, by the European Parliament on 19 May. The largest portion of “Creative Europe” will go to the MEDIA strand that supports the development, promotion and distribution of European films and audiovisual works, as well as cinemas via the Europa Cinemas network.
