3 Q's with Mette Schramm

For this month's edition of Big Screen Feature - providing a behind-the-scenes look at the world of cinema exhibition through the eyes of professionals themselves - Mette Schramm, CEO of Reprise Teatret, Empire Bio & Reel Pictures, discusses the job itself and the value of the Big Screen.

Describe your typical day at work.

Most days start at 7:00 AM when I check my emails and the daily financial reports from the evening before. I always try to prioritise some quiet time for myself before the “real” workday starts.

Some days I must attend screenings or participate in meetings, other days I do chores or answer emails. I have a to-do-list from which I choose different tasks and then spend some time working on them.

I also try to spend time with different staff members everyday. It can be a meeting with an agenda or just lunch together, it doesn’t matter. I love the interaction and our shared love of films and the cinema experience.

Most days are a mix of everything and something always happens that has to be fixed right away, so you can never really plan fully but to me that is actually one of the best things about working in a cinema and it definitely keeps me on my toes. It’s never boring!

The moment you fell in love with the Big Screen?

I was about seven years old and went to the cinema with my parents and loved it. When I was 17, I started working in a cinema and loved the atmosphere right from the start, to facilitate an experience and provide service for strangers so that their day gets better for it, is something special.

The best thing about the cinema experience?

The cinema auditorium is a room where a group of people, some strangers some not, can experience something together and by focusing on the screen and sitting still in darkness get a pause from real life. Whether they laugh, cry, scream or are silent doesn’t matter.
