3 Q's with Katharina Phebey

For this month's edition of Big Screen Feature - providing a behind-the-scenes look at the world of cinema exhibition through the eyes of professionals themselves - Katharina Phebey, Head of Marketing & Content, Member of the Management Board, Kinopolis, discusses the job itself and the value of the Big Screen.

Describe your typical day at work.
My typical day at work is that there is no typical day. As I am responsible for all marketing activities and content programming for 18 cinema sites, every day is different - which is what I love about it. Most days are packed with meetings within my teams and/or with the other departments. We work together on how best to position and market our most important product: film. And we're also expanding: we opened a new cinema in Bad Homburg last autumn and are about to open a new cinema in Hamburg this spring, so that's been on everyone's minds over the last few months.

The Moment you fell in Love with the Big Screen?
I actually fall in love with the big screen every time I go to see a film. It still amazes me how unique and great the experience is. When the lights go out, the murmurs and popcorn crunching cease, and the film begins, I feel a certain excitement - every time.

The best thing about the cinema experience?
Going to the cinema is such an immersive and communal experience. I just love how the atmosphere, the larger-than-life visual experience, the high-quality surround sound and the story pull you into the big screen - and you share it all with complete strangers. Whether it's laughing together at a comedy or holding our collective breath during a suspenseful scene, these shared reactions amplify our emotions. For me personally, going to the cinema also allows me to escape from the distractions of everyday life. It's a dedicated time to focus solely on the film, without interruptions from my phone, emails or other responsibilities. There is no better way to watch a film!
