EDCF Annual Update

Usually taking place during the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam, this year’s European Digital Cinema Forum (EDCF) annual update was hosted online on 10 September 2020. Moderated by Patrick von Sychowski (Editor, Celluloid Junkie), the event served as a great opportunity to hear about some of the latest trends and business developments in cinema technology in the context of the current crisis and as cinemas gradually re-open worldwide.

The update included a presentation from Adam MacDonald (European Sales Manager, GDC) on what his company was doing to ensure that cinema operators could quickly adapt and continue to efficiently operate during and beyond COVID-19.

This was followed by a presentation from Patrick von Sychowski on the future of cinema-going, sharing his positive outlook on the ability of the industry to recover from the crisis and bring audiences back to the Big Screen.

Goran Stojmenovik, Chairman of the Laser Illuminated Projector Association (LIPA), gave  an update on Laser Safety Regulations for cinema, delving deep into recent rules that had to be followed by cinema operators when installing laser equipment in their auditoriums. In another presentation related to laser projection, Tom Bert (Director of Cinema Technology, Barco), explored the efficiency of the technology and its broader impact on operations and designing the cinemas of tomorrow.

Later in the day,  James Gardiner (digitAll and CineTechGeek) presented Clairmeta, a python package for Digital Cinema Package (DCP) probing and checking, while Jeroen Schlaman (Innovation Specialist, Maccs) introduced his company and its solutions for distributors and cinema operators.

The event also featured our very own Rolv Gjestland, advisor in cinema concepts, design, logistics and technology for Film&Kino and author of How to design a cinema auditorium, recently re-published and available for free on the UNIC website. In his presentation, he explored the gap between theory (such as industry standards and recommendations) and reality when designing cinema auditoriums. He engaged in a lively defense of the need for (and limits related to) compromises, and the complexity of finding the adequate balance between objective and subjective criteria to achieve greatness and deliver a truly amazing Big Screen experience.
