Belgian Film Sector Day 28 March

UNIC was happy to participate in the first-ever Belgian “Film Sector Day” held on 28 March 2023 in Brussels. The event brought together cinema operators, film studios, and distributors to discuss the current state of Belgian cinema and the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

The event started with a presentation by Alain De Greef, Secretary General of Film Matters, who explained the work done by the Belgian distributor’s association, Film Matters, and the issues they are currently addressing. This was followed by a presentation by Thierry Laermans, Secretary General of the Federation of Belgian Cinemas (FCB), who highlighted the work done by the FCB.

The last presentation of the morning session was given by Laura Houlgatte, CEO of UNIC, who presented the current European cinema figures as well as the latest news and trends in European cinema.

This was followed by a presentation on consumer insights and marketing, led by Ariane Verrier from The Walt Disney Company and Maurits Stolte from Sony Pictures Releasing.

Afterwards, a panel discussion was held with three cinema operators: Stijn Vanspauwen from Kinepolis Group, Alexandre Kasim from Lights in the City, and Jon Michelena from Lumière Cinema. The panel discussed the main current concerns of exhibitors in Belgium such as programming, rising energy costs, shortage of staff and sustainability.

Finally, Anny Schmit from Sony Pictures Releasing and Thomas Verkaeren from O'Brother Distribution gave a presentation on film marketing strategy and content publishing.

Throughout the event the audience had the opportunity to watch trailers of upcoming film releases in Belgium. We look forward to attending the next iteration!
