"Over time the immersive aspect of a dark theatre screen taking you to alternative scenarios, lives and characters is still The Big Thing to me."

For the third edition of Big Screen Feature - providing a behind-the-scenes look at the world of cinema exhibition through the eyes of professionals themselves - Montse Gil (Vice-President & Managing Director, Paramount Pictures, Spain) discusses the job itself and the value of the Big Screen.

Describe your typical day at work

One of the most interesting aspects of my work in movie distribution is that every day is different, which makes difficult to describe it as “typical”. Overall, I focus on release planning and strategy, which implies meeting with my team to discuss and set release dates for our upcoming movies, strategise on release patterns and marketing plans and coordinate and integrate the implementation of the plans from every area. The fact that we work on different movies for different targets challenges us to be up-to-date by researching new ways of dealing with the changing competitive landscape and new audiences, which makes my job really exciting.

The moment you fell in love with the Big Screen?

There is not a precise moment but a period of my life; as a kid when going to the see a movie on the Big Screen was “The Big Thing”. It was usually my aunt taking the big group of cousins all together to see a movie, so beyond the movie, the cinema, the screen, it was the collective fun, the best fun possible. Over time the immersive aspect of a dark theatre screen taking you to alternative scenarios, lives and characters is still The Big Thing to me.

The best thing about the cinematic experience?

In a period of constant digital connection, always on, the possibility of “switching off” for a couple of hours is invaluable to me. To be able to disconnect from daily work, life and responsibilities and sit comfortably at a theatre screen to see, hear, laugh or cry, scream or jump and to ultimately experience an original story that takes you beyond reality, that is the best part of the experience.
