3 Q's with Jan Rasmussen

For this month's edition of Big Screen Feature - providing a behind-the-scenes look at the world of cinema exhibition through the eyes of professionals themselves - Jan Rasmussen, Head of Screen Technology, Nordisk Film Cinemas, discusses the job itself and the value of the Big Screen.

Describe your typical day at work.

Most days are spent working with my amazing team of cinema technicians and everyone else at our headquarters, planning new installations, following up on our technical operations, and collaborating with our colleagues from across the whole of Nordisk Film.

Our offices are located together with the rest of Nordisk Film at the studios in Copenhagen, where we have been for more than 100 years. We are one of the world's oldest operating film studios, but we also do post-production and distribution of movies as well as running an online gift card business, gaming studios, and the distribution of PlayStation for Sony in the Nordics. It's a fun and inspiring place to work.

The moment you fell in love with the Big Screen?

That question, I can answer with certainty. It was January 1978 when my parents took me to see "Star Wars" in the wonderful Imperial in Copenhagen. The movie opened for Christmas 1977 in Denmark and was still running strongly long into 1978. I still remember how my head was full of images of spaceships and stars as we drove home that evening. I was 11 years old, and that was the day my lifelong love affair with movies and cinema began. I actually have colleagues who talk about a very similar experience with the first Star Wars movie and its influence on their lives.

The best thing about the cinema experience?

When you forget that you are in a cinema and get immersed in the storytelling through engaging images and sound. The suspension of disbelief is our magical trick — it's where we can take our guests into the storytelling like no other medium.

Our job is to make sure nothing interferes with that magic by getting the fundamentals right every time: flawless technical performance, a comfortable place to share the magic, and staff who are there to make every visit to your cinemas a memorable one.
